I can remember listening to carols as we did our Christmas shopping. These were real Christmas carols being played throughout the stores not “I saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus” or “Santa Baby” or some delightful holiday song from one of our major rap stars. When clerks were finished with your purchase they would say, “Thank you” and “Merry Christmas”. Now you get, “Have a good one”, maybe.
At one time when you saw someone you knew at Christmas there almost seemed to be a competition to see who would be first to say, “Merry Christmas.”
“Merry Christmas, Jim”.
“Merry Christmas to you, Bob”.
Now, people don’t know what to say so they wait to be able to give the response Christmas greeting—“You too.”
This seems to work unless both are waiting to give the response greeting and then nothing is said and you feel like a dope.
But that’s where we are today. Better to not say anything than possibly offend another person by wishing them a Merry Christmas. Can you imagine? “Merry Christmas”.
So, from the bottom of my heart, at this joyous time of year, to you and yours, “You too” and “Have a good one.”
